Why am I helping to start Mountain Stream TV and asking you to support it?

Have you ever turned on the nightly news and wondered if there weren’t things happening in your community and in the world that were more important and relevant to your life than what was being reported on the major network? Me too. Have you ever seen a news report by the corporate news media about an event you’ve attended and wondered how the story could possibly be about the same event because it was interpreted in an apparently intentionally distorted manner or missed the point entirely? Me too. Have you ever seen a newspaper misquote, or out-of-context statement, that completely misleads the reader about the intentions of the person being quoted; that doesn’t even fully explain the issue about which the person was speaking? Me too. Have you ever wondered about the work of grassroots non-profit and community organizations, the obstacles they face and the victories they’ve won against great odds and in the face of opposition from powerful corporations, bought-off political leaders and a corrupted legal system – and why this is never reported on the “mainstream news media?”

Well I don’t wonder about this because I know the answer. It’s because the mainstream news media is owned by the same corporate interests that don’t want people to understand the power that each one of us possesses. It’s because information is power. I’m asking you to support Mountain Stream TV because it will empower the people of western North Carolina to provide in-depth, relevant information to each other that will help democratize the news media and change all our lives for the better. Unreported News

All the Individual Battles for Change Are Connected – because of a system that no longer works for the people and the planet—it is instead, designed to work for only the wealthiest people and mega transnational corporations. For that reason, the critical issue of the moment—is to stop fast track for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). President Obama has indicated that, given Fast Track Authority, he intends to sign the TPP.
Neither Congress—nor We the People—have information re the TTP’s full content; andwith fast track approvalneither will have the chance to amend or comment.
Congressional fast-tracking intends to solidify the systemic structures which already undermine our national sovereignty and democracy—meaning, the power of human people to determine their own futures. Labor’s MaryBe McMillan article http://www.ncpolicywatch.com/2015/04/28/dereliction-of-duty-2/ “No worker should have to trade health or life just to make a living, yet work kills an average of 12 workers every day. People like Juan Carlos Perez Cruz, 25, killed when he got caught on the conveyor belt of a tobacco harvester in Martin County or Bobby Ammons, 57, killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in Macon County…Since the passage of job safety laws more than four decades ago, we have made great progress in protecting workers at work. Thanks to mine safety laws and the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), fewer workers die on the job today than did in 1970, but we still have a long way to go to prevent workplace injuries and deaths….This is especially true in North Carolina, where our Labor Commissioner, Cherie Berry, has consistently shirked her responsibility to protects workers…”

What the Industry Doesn’t Want You to Know About Fracking https://ecowatch.com/2015/09/12/josh-fox-gaswork-fight-cjs-law/
One worker from western Pennsylvania told us he was hired by the fracking industry in the early days of the rush to drill the Marcellus Shale to cover up toxic spills in his own community, near the forests and streams where he would hunt and fish, near the front yard where his children play.

The Occupy Western NC General Assembly meets 2nd & 4th Tuesdays.  Guests and new members are always welcome!

Our mission: We are a diverse and non-partisan coalition, acting to promote social and economic equality—through education and action.

We are the vast majority who believe everyone should play by the same rules.  We don’t think Wall Street can foreclose on the American dream, buy our politicians, sell our jobs, ruin our economy, and then laugh all the way to the bailout. Under shared leadership, we reach decisions by consensus.

Next 2015 meetings: Tuesday, September 8th and 22nd. After four years in the Justice Center, we meet in this new location: Dogwood Wellness Center 114 West Hemlock St, Sylva NC 28779 https://www.google.com/search?q=114+Hemlock+St%2C+Sylva%2C+NC+28779&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 (828) 586-6262

One of our goals is a 28th Amendment to the US Constitution—nothing less than an end to the constitutional rights of corporate “Personhood” and to elections where money is NOT “Speech.” Only then, can democracy become legal in the United States.
