Ten thousand came in 2013. This year’s event will bring together thousands of people from across the region to protest what they see as destructive state policies and to help get out the vote in this year’s election. Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, President of the NC NAACP and other guest speakers, as well as Westsound and Blues and jazz great Kat Williams, will headline the rally.

The first-ever Jackson County NAACP Branch 54AB chose its officers May 17th at the Liberty Baptist Church in Sylva. Elected were: The Rev. Charles Lee (President); Avram Friedman (1st V. Pres.); Enrique Gomez (2nd V. Pres.); Mary Sue Casey (Secretary); Marian Price-White (Assist. Sec.); Joyce Stratton (Treasurer) and Lorna Burnett (Assist. Treas.) The meeting was followed by a public celebration of this historic occasion.  A second membership meeting was held July l2th. The NC NAACP has set a tentative date of August 9th at Mars Hill College for a formal training session for all new Western NC Executive Committee members.

REGULAR MEETINGS of MTA FAR-WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA—Sylva

Move to Amend’s affiliate in Far Western North Carolina-Sylva is coalition partnership of Occupy WNC and The Canary Coalition. Guests and new members always welcome.                                                                     Each second and fourth Tuesday the Western NC MTA affiliate meets at the OccupyWNC General Assembly. Our intent: to be a grassroots movement that is multi-racial, multi-generational, cross-gender orientation and identity, cross-party, cross-class and multi-cultural. Our goal: a 28th Amendment to the US Constitution—nothing less than an end to the US Constitution rights of corporate “Personhood” and to elections where money is NOT “Speech.” Only then, will democracy have a chance to be legalized in the United States

Next meetings: Tuesday, August 8th and 22nd, 2014 (7:00pm to 8:30pm)
